We take privacy and anonymity very seriously. Protecting anonymity is a major driving force of the project.
This service has specifically been designed to NOT expose private data. It uses the web browsing location (web address, URL) to create shared spaces. But the architecture of the service is carefully constructed so that the web address never leaves the user's computing equipment. Particularly the web browsing location is encrypted (hashed) locally to compute a chat room address. Only the anonymized result is then sent over a strongly encrypted network connection.
For technical detail please see the Virtual Presence Technical Note #2: https://www.virtual-presence.org/notes/VPTN-2.txt
What information do we process?
We use the current browsing location to create a chat room address.
An avatar image/animation and a nickname of your choice.
What do we use your information for?
To join a chat room with other people who happen to be at the same web address at the same time.
To personalize your experience so that you can appear to other people as you like.
What information is exposed?
Your presence at a web address is exposed to other people who happen to be at the same or related web addresses at the same time with the same or related services for the duration of the stay. But only your presence at the general web site, not your specific web address, and not your web browser URL. Secrets of visited web services, such as session IDs, user IDs, data entered like payment information, email addresses, physical addresses, and passwords are NOT exposed.
Your appearance information (nickname, avatar, other properties of the online appearance) is transmitted to the chat room and then to other participants in a transient fashion while you share a virtual space. However, these are your choice and you can be completely anonymous.
We want to inform you that whenever you use our service, support files may be requested by the service from our servers. This process generates log data, which may include information such as your device Internet Protocol (“IP”) address, device name, operating system version, the time and date of your use of the service, and other statistics. Log data is only stored temporarily on our servers for problem analysis.
How do we protect your information?
We do not store any information on our servers. All information is kept locally on your computing equipment and in the browser storage
Your appearance information is stored in the synchronized storage of the web browser, if it is enabled, so that you have the same configuration on other computing equipment. This process employs the synchronized storage mechanism of the browser vendor and their servers for synchronization as designed by the browser vendor.
Your web addresses are only used locally, then irreversibly encrypted (hashed), in the hashed form transmitted, and then only temporarily stored in our chat servers. The information is anonymous, transient, and deleted as soon as you leave the respective web address.
Log data is only stored on our servers. It is protected by the same security level that protects the operational security of our servers.
Do we disclose any information to outside parties?
We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer to outside parties your personally identifiable information. This does not include trusted third parties who assist us in operating our website, conducting our business, or servicing you, so long as those parties agree to keep this information confidential. We may also release your information when we believe release is required to comply with the law, enforce our service policies, or protect ours or other's rights, property, or safety.
We value your trust in providing us your Personal Information, thus we are striving to use commercially acceptable means of protecting it. But remember that no method of transmission over the internet, or method of electronic storage is 100% secure and reliable, and we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
Protecting all users
It is your duty to not intentionally violate the privacy, the property, and the safety of others.
